Martial Arts Training at Berkeley

The 33rd Annual Korean Martial Arts Summer Camp is a wonderful opportunity to train under the tutelage of accomplished martial arts instructors in a collegial environment. This combination of training and environment has its roots in the everyday training of traditional martial arts in Korea where outdoor training begins at daybreak and continues throughout the day and evening, covering physical, intellectual and spiritual aspects. Participants are certain to be rewarded with a memorable educational and training experience.

Training Schedule
Daily training will encompass taekwondo, yongmudo, judo, and kumdo (Korean swordsmanship). Ssirum (Korean wrestling) will be a one-time special session. Training includes refreshing early morning runs or kumdo training, extensive warm-up and stretching sessions, and intensive instruction of various techniques in the four primary martial arts. In addition to physical training, participants will be exposed to Korean culture and history, learning how they have influenced and enhanced the Korean martial arts. Evening discussion presentations will also be offered to enrich the understanding of the martial arts.

A typical day begins at 6:00 am with the morning run or kumdo training and ends in the evening with a presentation, lecture, or mild activity. In between, participants are encouraged to try different martial arts throughout the day. The tentative schedule is intended to include two martial arts offered during each training session allowing participants a choice. For example, participants can choose either taekwondo or yongmudo. For the next training session, participants can choose between kumdo and judo. Remember, the final schedule will not be prepared until later in the summer.

Facilities
The camp will be held at the University of California Berkeley campus and training will take place in our spacious martial arts facilities. Breakfast and lunch will be included. Participants will need to find accommodations around the Berkeley campus. Participants will have full access to the Recreational Sports Facilities restrooms and locker rooms including showers.
